Within the Eu-Repair project (European Climate Initiative – EUKI), the Innovation Center of the University of Niš (ICUN) highlights a remarkable example of integrating risk management and resilience into heritage preservation – the Studenica Monastery, a 12th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Serbia’s most treasured cultural landmarks.
While many restoration projects focus on aesthetics and energy performance, Studenica shows that sustainability also means preparedness—ensuring heritage endures not only through time but through crises.
 Key measures implemented:
  • Development of a Disaster Risk Management Plan outlining clear response procedures for monks and staff.
  • Installation of an automatic fire detection and alarm system with nearly invisible sensors inside the medieval church.
  • Implementation of a lightning protection system integrated into the roof to prevent lightning-induced fires.
  • Structural reinforcement of a vulnerable wall corner using stainless-steel ties and discreet braces, preserving visual integrity.
  • Training exercises with local firefighters on heritage-specific fire response and emergency coordination.
Impact:
The project made Studenica significantly more resilient to fire, lightning, and seismic risks — a model that inspired similar efforts across Serbia. It exemplifies collaboration between heritage authorities and emergency services, effectively translating national laws on cultural heritage and emergency management into practical action.
