How does “protecting the image of a city or village” look in concrete renovation decisions?
The Möglhof conversion in Rimsting shows a pragmatic path. A historic farm building was reused for a high-intensity health and sport program. The project retained the familiar exterior appearance of the farmstead, while incorporating roof-based daylighting and subtle material choices to meet contemporary comfort and energy requirements. Inside, the historic timber structure and open volume remain legible, with sports and therapy functions inserted as lightweight, reversible layers rather than a heavy rebuild.
For the Eu-Repair project, this case reinforces a simple rule for scalable guidance:
- Define townscape-critical elements early
- Route performance improvements to low-visibility surfaces first
- Pair heritage buildings with community-relevant uses
