The building sector accounts for 5–12% of total EU greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from building construction and renovation, including material extraction and transportation. It is responsible for approximately 40% of the EU’s final energy consumption.
This makes the building sector a key contributor to GHG emissions in the EU.
While there is growing attention on energy-inefficient buildings , valuable built environments (VBE) – historical buildings (older than 50 years) possessing architectural and cultural value are often neglected due to specific requirements, limited funding , and lack of knowledge.
The Eu-Repair project aims to transform the repair of VBE, making refurbishment more sustainable while preserving valuable properties and the uniqueness of buildings in North Macedonia , Serbia , Lithuania , Estonia , and Germany .
Eu-Repair project will build capacities for reducing long-term CO2 emissions related to VBE by:
- transnational exchange of knowledge and sustainable techniques;
- recommendations for improving standards and guidelines for the repair of valuable built environments ;
- enhancing the expertise of professionals, students, and educators through training, workshops, hackathons, and multiplier events;
- online learning platform toolkit, embedding energy efficiency, renewables, and circular economy into increased repair cycles in construction.
